Understanding Your Inner World
We all have different parts inside of us that form a system or internal family. Some parts are young and carry the pain of past experiences (wounded parts). To keep us safe from this pain, protectors develop that are burdened with trying to ward off emotional pain. These protectors work hard, but their strategies—like anxiety, numbing out, or repression—can be exhausting and often create problems when they take over. We get to know the parts through openness and curiosity, listen to their concerns, and heal the underlying wounds they have been trying to protect. Internal Family Systems therapy teaches that Self, which our naturally calm, patient state of being, is the healer. IFS involves unblending from protector parts, returning to Self, and forming a welcoming compassionate relationship with wounded parts, so they feel seen and cared for. Traumatic experiences are stored in our bodies. That's why you might feel a knot in your stomach, tension in your shoulders, or a general sense of being on edge. To help your system release the stored stress, we use gentle, body-based techniques. |
Releasing "Stuck" Energy
Implementing grounding and emotional regulation skills sometimes are needed for integration of wounded parts. Bilateral postures, like the pretzel technique, involve crossing the midline help the right and left sides of the brain communicate better and better integrate the mind and body. When your brain's hemispheres are more connected, it's easier to process difficult emotions and feel more grounded and whole. Natural Flow EMDR is a gentle therapy that helps your body process unresolved memories and emotions and release bodily- stored traumas. An abbreviated body scan is incorporated to help you become more comfortable with experiencing the wholeness of their body. Letting go of bracing or guarding in the belly, shoulders, and area under the ears helps to feel grounded. Resourcing pleasant or neutral memories and practicing grounding skills help calm the nervous system, so you can return to Self and unload the weight of the past. |
I then guide you to put the feeling that hurtful memory or trauma brings up in a lockbox. I support the client in receiving bilateral (left-right) stimulation using a Thera-Tapper, which provides soft, alternating vibration via two hand-held pulsars. This helps calm and soothe the nervous system. The theratapper allows for the client to close their eyes and go deeper into their experience than bilateral tapping. We then explore the memory, when all parts are ready. This approach often results in an experience of feeling calm and present and may allow for more feelings of freedom and joy to occur. |
